VOC ELECTION Cheat Sheet

Nomination Day: The second Wednesday before Election Day
May 14, 2014 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm

Elector: Ordinary residents of the Village of Chester having resided in the
village for no less than 6 months prior to the election.
A person is an ordinary resident in the place where they sleep, and whenever absent,
intend to return to.

Candidate: An elector who, before the close of nomination day, will have declared
himself or been nominated by no less than 5 electors with his consent, to be a candidate.
Form A must be signed by all and submitted to the Clerk before 5:00 pm on Nomination Day.
Form A is available upon request from the Village of Chester Office. 275-4482

***If no nomination papers have been filed with the Village Office, the Chair may call for
nominations from the floor at the AGM

Returning Officer: The Clerk Treasurer will act as Returning Officer for the Advance
Poll and the Election. Deputy Officers may be appointed to act as scrutineers to
assist in carrying out duties and act in place of, if the Clerk Treasurer is absent.

Advance Polling: The Saturday immediately before Election Day

An elector who expects to be absent on Election Day may vote on the advance polling
day. NO votes cast on the advance polling day will be counted before the close of
Election Day.

Election Day: Election of Commissioner or Commissioners will take place between
9:00 am and 7:00 pm
on Tuesday, May 27, 2014.

Polls: Voting will take place at the VOC office at 27 Pleasant Street.

Ballots: A single ballot paper will be used with the name or names of all the
eligible candidates listed.

There will be one vote only for each candidate or candidates in the event of more than
one vacancy.

Counting ballots: After voting has completed, the ballots will be counted, including the advance poll
ballots.

As soon as the result of the election is known, the Clerk Treasurer will declare
the successful candidate or candidates having the highest number of votes. If there is
a tie, the Clerk Treasurer will determine the successful candidate by lot as per the
Municipal Government Act.

Advertising: An ad announcing the date of the Advance Polling and Election Day
will be placed in the Bulletin Progress Enterprise two weeks prior to the Advance
Polling Day. A notice will also be placed at the Post Office

List of Candidates: A list of candidates will be posted on the web site. www.villageofchester.org
A list will also be available at the office or by email upon request.

Candidates are free to campaign and make known their platform to the residences of the
Village.
There may be an opportunity to hold a public meeting at the office of the Commission
to meet and ask questions of the candidates. This will be determined by interest shown
by the residents.

AGM: The Annual General Meeting of the Village of Chester Commission will
be held at the St. Stephen Parish Hall on Wednesday, May 28 a 6:45 pm.
